GLOBAL CHARITIES

HIMALAYAN CATARACT FOUNDATION

The Himalayan Cataract Project (HCP) aspires to cure global blindness, one patient at a time. We work to overcome barriers to accessing quality eye care, serving people in low-resource countries in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa where the burden of needless cataract blindness is extremely high. With a 10-minute surgery that costs $25 in materials, sight can be restored.

To accomplish our mission, HCP

·  Supports sight-restoring surgical events in both rural and urban communities

·  Provides specialized training for aspiring ophthalmic professionals so they may serve their local communities

·  Procures equipment and supplies for new eye care centers

·  Advocates for additional eye health resources in under-served communities

Impact: In 2020, together with our collective network of partners around the world, Himalayan Cataract Project reached and surpassed over 1 million sight-restoring surgeries.

CONNECT AFRICA FOUNDATION

Founded in 2005, Connect Africa promotes the self- sufficiency of Ugandans through access to education, vocational training and microloans.  The American co-director resides in Uganda six months of the year while the Ugandan co-director is always available in the community to respond to every need.  Our hands-on collaborative approach allows us to create direct, personal, and long lasting relationships with those we serve and their families.

Schools are not free.  We sponsor educational fees for orphans and the most vulnerable children who would not be educated without our help.  The Vocational Institute student body is predominately 14-22 year old females; the two year practical training programs provide means for a lifetime of self-sufficiency as tailors, caterers, metal workers, carpenters, and hairdressers.

Micro loans have had a multiplying benefit to over 3000 family members, helping villagers to support themselves with self-sustaining businesses.

IMPACT: Since 2005, we have funded educational opportunities  for 1500 students and awarded 260+ micro loans.

THE PARENTS CIRCLE

THE PARENTS’ CIRCLE- FAMILIES FORUM {PCFF} is a joint Israeli – Palestinian organization of over 600 families, all of whom have lost an immediate family member to the ongoing conflict.  Our mission is to foster a reconciliation process between members of both societies – Israeli and Palestinian - in the belief that the process of reconciliation is a crucial element of any lasting future peace process.

To achieve that mission, The Parents’ Circle engages in a variety of peacebuilding, educational, and dialogue activities such as:

·  Dialogue meetings led by two PCFF members, an Israeli and a Palestinian, who tell their personal stories of bereavement and explain their choice to engage in dialogue instead of revenge.

·  A Women’s Group comprised of bereaved women from both societies.  The Women’s Group provides dialogue, solidarity, and leadership opportunities to empower bereaved women peace leaders.

·  Many activities with youth, young adults, and narrative exploration programs.

THE HALO TRUST

The mission of The HALO Trust is to protect lives and restore livelihoods threatened by landmines and the deadly debris of war.  We make communities safe by destroying landmines and explosives, teaching adults and children how to avoid explosive dangers, and helping fragile states safely store stockpiles of weapons to keep them out of the wrong hands.  HALO currently employs over 8,500 locally recruited staff in 25 countries and territories around the world from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe who work to make their own communities safe following conflict.

Clearing landmines is a painstaking process.  Most of our clearance work is done by hand.  We do this work so that displaced families can return home, children can walk to school safely, and communities can rebuild after war and conflict ends.

Because of HALO, millions of families have been able to return to their homes, plant their crops, and live safely  - but there is still much work to do.

NEWTON/San Juan Del Sur SISTER CITY PROJECT

The World Health Organization says that every year more people - mostly women - will die prematurely from lung disease caused by cooking smoke than will die from Malaria or AIDS combined.

The solution to this crisis is simple but amazing: clean cooking.

That is one reason why San Juan del Sur Sister City Project has been focusing for the past four years on perfecting our exciting new model of the EcoStove, one that uses no cement and almost no rebar, both of which have substantial carbon footprints.  Our stoves are made from Compressed Earth Blocks, which we produce using our Compressed Earth Block press.  Our earthenware two-burner stoves use less than half the wood of traditional open fires, and our chimneys carry the smoke away.

CLIMATE EMERGENCY FUND

The Climate Emergency Fund (CEF) is turbo-charging the climate movement by supporting its most brave and adamant activists.  We support the people who tell the truth, demand transformation at emergency speed, and put everything else on the line to protect humanity and the living world.

CEF was created to fund the new wave of climate activism with a new level of urgency and a vision of rapid transformation such as that embodied by youth strikers.  We were the core funders of the Climate Emergency Declaration campaigns that have now gone viral.  More than 2,000 local governments and ten countries have declared a climate emergency.

HOPE FOR HAITI

For the past 32 years, Hope for Haiti has been working in southern Haiti to resource and empower local leaders and support systems of education, healthcare, access to clean water, and economic opportunity.  We currently have 62 full time Haitian team leaders who call Les Cayes home and who are key in the implementation of our strategic plan.

The news of yet another natural disaster is devastating, and our team stands ready and uniquely qualified to the immediate, short-term, and long-term needs of the Haitian people in the aftermath of the 2021 earthquake.

As one of the most trusted organizations working to reduce poverty in Haiti, Hope for Haiti is focused on providing support and partnership for the Haitian people every single day.
